Program Overview
A. Project Description: What is an Egyptian student residency permit?
This is a temporary residence permit issued by the Egyptian government to foreigners studying full-time at Egyptian universities, colleges, or accredited educational institutions.
• Nature: It is not the same as an entry visa, but a long-term legal residence permit that must be obtained after entering Egypt and requires renewal.
• Validity period: Usually 1 year, renewable annually, covering your entire academic cycle.
B. Required Application Requirements
To apply for or renew a student residence permit, the following core conditions must be met and corresponding supporting documentation provided:
• Core Qualifications: Admitted to or enrolled in a recognized Egyptian educational institution (such as Cairo University, Al-Azhar University, etc.).
Key documents:
1. Proof of Admission/Enrollment: An official document issued by the school to prove your student status.
2. Valid passport: The passport is usually valid for at least 6 months.
3. Financial proof: Bank statement or scholarship certificate showing sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses.
4. Certificate of no criminal record: must be notarized.
5. Photo: A recent personal ID photo.
C. Practical Suggestions
Do not confuse visas with residence permits: a visa for entry is not the same as a residence permit. Upon arrival in Egypt, you must promptly convert/apply for a "student residence permit".
• Distinguish between "validity period" and "stay period": These two dates on the visa sticker are different. You must strictly abide by the time stipulated in your residence permit. Overstaying will result in fines or even deportation.
• Renew your visa one month in advance: Residence permits are usually renewed annually. It is recommended to contact the school's international office one month before the expiry date to prepare the necessary materials to avoid a gap in your status.
• Be aware of work restrictions: Ordinary student residence permits do not automatically grant the right to work. Working off-campus requires a separate work authorization application; otherwise, it is considered illegal.
D. Application Process
The entire process is mainly divided into two steps: before entry and after entry.
Step 1: Before entering the country (in one's home country)
Apply for a student visa at the Egyptian consulate in your country, submitting your acceptance letter and other relevant documents.
Step Two: After Entering Egypt – Key Steps
Upon arrival in Egypt, you must go to the Passport, Immigration and Nationality Administration in Abbasiya as soon as possible to apply for a residence permit.
Step 3: Specific Processing Steps
1. Required documents: Passport (and a copy), letter of acceptance, proof of financial resources, photos, etc.
2. To the agency: Head to the immigration building in Abbasiya, where there is an office specifically for handling the residence of foreigners.
3. Submit the application: Fill out the application form at the counter and submit it along with the required documents.
4. Payment of Fees: After the immigration officer calculates the fees, the relevant administrative fees are paid at a designated bank window (usually in the same building).
5. Collect the sticker: After your application is approved, you will receive a notification to return and collect your passport. The residence sticker will then be affixed to your passport.
