Austria is part of the Schengen Area, and tourists usually apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C), which allows a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Before submitting your application, please ensure you meet the following mandatory requirements:
• Passport: The passport must be valid for at least 3 months longer than your planned departure date (6 months or more is recommended), and have two blank pages. The passport must have been issued within the last 10 years.
• Funds: Proof of sufficient financial resources to cover travel and return expenses (usually based on bank statement balance).
• Insurance: Purchase travel medical insurance covering the entire Schengen Area, with a coverage of no less than 30,000 euros (approximately 300,000 RMB).
• Itinerary: Austria must be your main destination in the Schengen Area (i.e., where you will spend the most time).

1. Apply in advance: It is recommended to submit your application 3 weeks to 6 months in advance. Although the rule is no later than 15 days before departure, processing time may be longer during peak season, so applying early is more reliable.
2. Principle of Authenticity: Only reservations for flights and hotels are required (payment before visa issuance is not recommended), but the itinerary must be genuine and credible. The consulate may verify information by phone at any time, and false documents will result in visa refusal.
3. Fingerprint registration: First-time Schengen visa applicants must submit their fingerprints in person; the fingerprints are valid for 59 months. If fingerprints have been registered before, someone else can submit them on your behalf.
Austrian tourist visa application process
Step 1: Determine the consular district and make an appointment
Choose the corresponding Austrian Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) based on your registered residence/place of residence, and schedule an appointment to submit your application on the official website.
• Shanghai consular district: Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang.
• Beijing/Other consular districts: All provinces and municipalities other than those mentioned above.
Step Two: Prepare Application Materials (Core)
Please prepare a complete set of A4-sized materials according to this checklist. The order can be referenced as follows:
1. Schengen visa application form: Completed online or printed and handwritten, must be signed in Chinese by the applicant (the signature must match the one in the passport).
2. Original passport and photocopies: the first page (personal information page) and all pages with visas and stamps. Old passports, if applicable, must also be provided.
3. Photos: 2 color photos with a white background (35mm x 45mm), taken within the last 6 months.
4. Round-trip flight reservation: A reservation without tickets is acceptable, and it must show the applicant's name.
5. Proof of accommodation: Hotel booking confirmations covering the entire itinerary (including the applicant's name).
6. Detailed itinerary: An English itinerary plan including dates, cities, attractions, and modes of transportation.
7. Medical insurance policy: original and photocopy. The policy must cover the entire Schengen Area stay and the coverage amount must meet the requirements.
8. Proof of employment/enrollment:
• For current employees: A certificate of employment in English (stamped with the company seal and signed by the supervisor), including position, salary, leave, and who will bear the expenses. A photocopy of the business license with the company seal.
• Retirees: A photocopy of their retirement certificate.
• Students: School leave approval certificate and student ID.
9. Proof of financial resources: Original bank statements for the past 3-6 months (stamped by the bank), with a balance sufficient to cover all expenses. Large, sudden deposits are not recommended.
10. Other: A full photocopy of the household registration booklet, and (if applicable) a photocopy of the property ownership certificate/vehicle ownership certificate will help with visa issuance.
Step 3: Submission and Fingerprint Recording
Go to the visa center at your scheduled appointment time to submit your application materials, have your fingerprints taken, and have your digital photo taken.
Step 4: Pay the fee
• Visa fee: €90 for those 12 years and older; €45 for those 6-12 years old.
Service fee: Approximately 200 RMB (subject to real-time pricing).
Step 5: Inquiry and Collection
Processing time is generally about 14 days. You can check the progress online using the receipt number and choose to pick up your passport in person or by mail.
